Postoperative instructions and expectations following Laser Saphenous Vein Ablation

Compression stockings must be worn after the procedure. The stockings (classII thigh high or pantyhose) which should be acquired prior to surgery are to be worn for one month thereafter.

Discomfort after the procedure is normal. It may vary from mild to moderate. It is usually described as tightness in the thigh. This resolves in one to two weeks. Ecchymosis or (black and blues) are expected and will vary or each individual.

Immediately following surgery compression stockings should be placed. They are not to be removed for 24 hours. The following evening remove the stockings and take a shower. Clean all areas gently with soap. Wearing the compression stockings at night is not necessary, but they should be placed first thing in the morning.

It is OK to take Tylenol for pain. Motrin, ibuprofen and aspirin should be avoided for the first few days as these may increase bleeding.

Normal ambulation is encouraged. Not ambulating (sitting for prolonged periods of time) increases the risk of venous clot.

Exercise should be avoided for the first few days as this may increase discomfort and potentially bleeding.

Results will vary between individuals. Most of the time any remaining sam ll varicose veins or spider veins that persist can be treated with sclerotherapy vein injections.
